In an op-ed for Pobjeda, U.S. chargé d’affaires ad interim Michael Keays reflects on his experience in Montenegro and the growing ties between the two countries during what he describes as a historically significant year.

He highlights Montenegro’s natural beauty, history, and hospitality, while noting that 2026 marks both 120 years of bilateral relations and 20 years since Montenegro restored independence. At the same time, the United States is celebrating 250 years of its own independence.

Keays emphasises the potential to deepen economic cooperation, with a key priority being a new intergovernmental agreement aimed at boosting trade, investment, and collaboration in sectors like infrastructure, energy, digital economy, and security. He argues this could create jobs and strengthen Montenegro’s regional role.

The op-ed also underscores Montenegro’s strategic importance in the Western Balkans, particularly in energy diversification and regional connectivity, including within the Three Seas Initiative. Keays concludes that Montenegro is at a turning point, with an opportunity to unlock its full economic and geopolitical potential through a closer partnership with the United States.
